Playing golf, whether for relaxation or competition, is an increasingly popular pastime all around the world. It has been talked up by all kinds of people you wouldn’t expect – who would have thought, all those years ago, that shock-rocker Alice Cooper would turn out to be a massive golf fan, for example? Although it is considered by many people to be a perfect method of relaxation, though, there is no doubt that golf is something you want to do well.

Although there is a lot of fun to be had on the golf course, it does kind of spoil it if you are not very good. Hitting shots badly only serves to spoil the enjoyment. If your every drive ends up in the long rough or the trees, then you’ll take forever to finish a hole, never mind a full round. Sometimes, a lot of practice is required. How do you practice before heading out to the course? Well, one way is to buy a golf practice net.

With a golf practice net you can hone your swing so that you are hitting drives well without having to slam constant tee shots into the next county. You can hit as hard as you like and the net will stop the ball, dropping it to the bottom of the net and rolling them back to you. This way you concentrate on hitting the ball as hard and as well as you can, without having to worry about where it will end up.

A golf practice net are also beneficial for practicing a medium-short range game, for example if your chip shots from off the green are lacking a certain something. We’ve all had the problem of getting close and looking to chip for the pin, hitting it too soft and watching it get caught up in the fringe, or hitting it too hard and watching it roll off on the other side. A practice net will allow you to hone this shot so you’re getting the power just right. All in all, a good golf practice net will improve your game endlessly. And they can be good fun, too.

Golf is one of those sports which is almost as popular to play as it is to watch – perhaps even more so. In this respect it is almost alone among the big spectator sports out there, as most of us will admit to preferring to watch a good game of football than actually risking our health playing it, and the same can be said for boxing, but more emphatically.

Overall, golf has this level of popularity because it is accessible to human beings with limited athleticism and physical strength. Oh, it is better to be fit and strong, and the amount of physical training Tiger Woods does would put a lot of other sportsmen to shame. It is, however, still a sport for all.

The fact is, though, that being at least a competent golfer does make the game more enjoyable. Not all of us have the talent to play off scratch, or to repeatedly go under par, but the more we improve our game the more fun it can be. A backyard game of touch football is often more endearing for the poor tackling and shambolic handling skills, but without competence in at least the major shots, golf can become a drag. Constantly retrieving shots from the long rough and other traps can get wearing when all you want is to finish a round in less than a hundred shots.

The proper golf grip is essential if you want to bring your game up to a level where you can play a decent round with good players and finish before the sun goes down. By practicing, you can shave shots off your average round and make the game more enjoyable as a result. There will always be sand traps and other cunningly-positioned hazards for the player who feels that they are lacking a challenge. Getting a proper golf grip will not make the game boring.

If you want to have some idea of what the proper golf grip is, there are plenty of sites available to give you a steer – there is no perfect way to hold the club because comfort is a major part of the game. Try practicing in front of the mirror to get a grip that looks and feels right if you are unsure of yours.

Any golfer’s dream would be to have a garden big enough to contain a full-sized golf course. The more pragmatic among us might dream of a nine-hole course, but even that is often the stuff of lottery dreams. There are clear geographical constraints to having a place to practice golf in your own garden, but these need not mean that you cannot hone your game in the comfort of your own back garden. In actual fact, a garden of moderate size can be perfect for these purposes.

One way to get the best out of a garden when it comes to golfing practice is to get a backyard putting green installed. You can never practically practise driving in your garden unless you have a lot of land and even more patience – but a putting green allows you to play your short game until you are perfectly confident and ready to hit the course for real. The great thing about backyard putting greens is that they are enormously versatile and will give you every chance to hone the practice until it is perfect.

There is a wide variety of backyard putting greens available, and installation is getting easier as time goes on. A good backyard green with minimal installation – indeed, one you can install yourself no matter how skilled or otherwise you may be with tools – is not beyond the logistic capabilities nor the wallet of any dedicated golfer. Once installed, it can allow you to practise your putts exactly how you would like to be able to at a club course.

The range of backyard putting greens available to the dedicated player is something that will turn any amateur’s head. There are some which use real grass, but also many which use artificial turf to ape the behavior of a green that you would find at a professional course. There is after all only so much you can learn from putting on your office carpet – and the backyard putting green is designed to ensure you never need to do so again. Check the dimensions that your garden can reasonably support, and then see what you could get installed today.

Golf is the perfect relaxation sport. Of course, for any amateur player there are elements of it which will be frustrating (and these are not confined to amateurs, either, as any professional will tell you). But compared to some of the other popular sports, golf has something special. The pace is not too draining, the game takes place in nature, and you can play far away from crowds. There is something about golf that just makes it perfect for a sedate few hours.

One thing that can put a dampener on an enjoyable game of golf, though, is the inability to judge putts. Time and again you put a tee or approach shot on the edge of the green, perfectly positioned for a birdie or even an eagle. Time and again, these chances roll by frustratingly as the putting gene deserts you. Hit it too hard and it lips out, and carries on rolling for a few yards. Too soft and it may not even go a foot, depending on the way the green is playing.

The important thing is to get your putting action right. Putting action is one of the few constants in a game which depends heavily upon the reading of the course (and in no small part, the greens). By buying an indoor putting green you can practice until your short game looks as honed as it can get. There will still be the issue of reading the green, but that is something that no amount of practice will remove. That is part of the game’s perverse charm. If you really fancy a challenge you can always modify the indoor putting green.

To really make the best of an indoor putting green you need to find a patch of floor in your home that allows you to adopt your putting stance comfortably and swing the club in a natural, relaxed manner. The more you practise, the better you will get and you will see the results when you are on a real green at a real course. The days of knocking putts a full three yards short or long can be consigned to the past.
